developing tropo applications has been a joy. i’m really glad when tropo finally announced web api (with ruby binding of course). i use github to store the tutorial and heroku/tropo to host the application.

Today someone posted a blog using nokia n900. I’m trying to blog with droid. This is my first blog using droid as I’m still getting used to the physical keyboard. It is so nice to blog while listening to music streamed from iMusic. There are several simple html formatting support, tagging, and insert image function. I like it.

Running APIDemos Tests in Android SDK 1.5pre

I learned last night that the Android SDK 1.5 pre was out. I downloaded it and tried to write a simple service test work without any luck. I couldn’t find any sample test code for service that’s clear enough to help me. After a few posts in Android’s google group I finally get it working. Hopefully Android team will in the future write some good documentation on how to setup the test environment in Eclipse. Here is what I did to get it work in case people running into same problems.

I assume that you’ve downloaded and installed the SDK and ADT .9 inside Eclipse.

1. Create a project for api demo:

In Eclipse, create a new Android project using existing source for ApiDemos:

/projects/android-sdk-mac_x86-1.5_pre/platforms/android-1.5/samples/ApiDemos

I installed the SDK on a macbook, so you’ll need to adjust the directory based on your installation.

2. Create a project for api demo tests:

In Eclipse, create another Android project using existing source. This time, the path to source should be:

projects/android-sdk-mac_x86-1.5_pre/platforms/android-1.5/samples/ApiDemos/tests

You will get some errors because the test project needs to know where the api demo project is. So open project properties -> Java Build Path -> Projects, and add the first project you created as required projects on the build path.

3. Make sure there’s no errors in either project. I have added java sdk and junit libraries to the build path to get rid some errors.

4. Run the first project as Android project. You should see the emulator starts and api demo being deployed.

5. Run the 2nd (test) project as Android project and you should see something like this:

6. Open a commandline, assume your have SDK’s tools directory in your path, type this to run the LocalServiceTest:

adb shell am instrument -w -e class \

com.example.android.apis.app.LocalServiceTest \

com.example.android.apis.tests/android.test.InstrumentationTestRunner

Note: above 3 lines is one command.

You should see something like this:

7. If properly setup, you can run test from within Eclipse using Run As…, Then choose Android JUnit test on LocalServiceTest.

Dualboot Ubuntu on Macbook

This is the best of the two worlds.

Macbook: OSX Leopard, 64bit, duo-core

I basically followed ubuntu forum’s article which you can easily google. I twisted the installation instruction a bit and here’s a brief update.

1. Run bootcamp from Leopard to assign Windows partition, although we’re going to use this partition for Ubuntu.

2. Install rEFit, edit refit.conf and uncomment legacyfirst, which should be the last line in the default configuration. This will set Linux to be the first boot option.

3. Download 64-bit Ubuntu desktop edition, run md5 against the image and verify with ubuntu md5sum sheet, then burn the iso image.

4. Reboot into Ubuntu CD image.

5. Select manual partition, delete anything other than mac and rEFit partitions. Create a new partition of type ex3 and mtn to /, and the rest space should be allocated to swap. There’re so many instructions nowadays online on how much space should be allocated to swap space.

6. At the end of installation wizard, click on the advanced button and select to install grub on sda instead of the default hda0.

7. Finish installation and reboot. You should be presented to rEFit’s graphic boot menu and select partition tool to sync up MBR.

8. Reboot (at least for me I had to) and you’ll be presented to a sweet Linux/Mac dual boot menu.

Do upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04

I read David’s experience with Ubuntu 8.04 . My experience running 8.04 on Thinkpad T61 (Lenovo model) is mostly positive.

Sound card partially works: there is sound coming out of the speakers but the microphone is not picking up the sound. I googled and found out that I may need to reinstall some packages.

My T61 doesn’t have a fancy graphic card like T61p and it works out-of-box.

Firefox 3 beta 5 rocks. I have no high CPU consumption problem running GMail for a long time.

I’m doing a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu. Now I have less need to ever go back to Windows.
